According to foreign media reports, German Daimler Benz automobile company has agreed to pay royalties to Nokia, ending the legal dispute between technology companies and auto companies over royalties for key technologies. Nokia can earn 1.4 billion euros (about 1.7 billion US dollars) in revenue every year through patent licensing.

In recent years, Nokia and Daimler have sued each other in German courts, and the two sides have launched a legal war. Technology companies want car manufacturers to pay royalties for technologies used in navigation systems, vehicle communications and autopilot, while the latter claim that the royalties should be paid by their suppliers, which may reduce the income of the patent holders.

On June 1, Daimler and Nokia jointly announced the agreement reached by the two sides, marking the victory of Nokia. Nokia and Daimler did not disclose the terms of their patent licensing deal, but both companies said they would stop suing. "From an economic point of view, we welcome this settlement because it allows us to avoid lengthy legal disputes," a Daimler spokesman said

So far, Daimler has never paid royalties to Nokia. Audi, Bentley, BMW, mini, Porsche, Rolls Royce, SIAT, Skoda, Volkswagen and Volvo all pay royalties to Nokia. According to sources, similar technology patent licensing transactions show that each car can bring Nokia a royalty of slightly more than $2.

Last year, the German court asked the European Supreme Court for guidance on the dispute between Nokia and Daimler. With the end of the dispute, the German court's request lost its meaning. However, Continental, the German auto parts maker, said it would not abandon the lawsuits against Nokia in Germany and the United States. In 2019, the mainland, together with Daimler, Borui technology, Valeo and tyrez's Gemalto, filed a complaint against Nokia on patent fees with the EU antitrust regulator.
