Current Position: Home > IP News > The fighting between the two sides will escalate again! Google counterclaims SONOS patent infringement

Recently, the patent war between Google and SONOS has intensified.

After SONOS sued Google earlier this year for infringing its patent, Google also accused SONOS of infringing its patent.

So why is the former partner the enemy of today? What is the story behind it?

Google and SONOS are both US technology companies.

As a multinational technology giant, Google is also famous in the world, and its business scope is very wide.

SONOS is an innovative technology company based in California, USA, which mainly develops and produces home wireless smart speakers. SONOS is also famous in its field.

As two technology-based companies, we have had a very pleasant cooperation.

The two companies have worked together to bring some of Google's services to the SONOS platform.

Until the beginning of 2020, there was a sudden "sudden change in painting style". SONOS sued Google in court, and the patent war between the two companies began.

In January 2020, SONOS sued Google for patent infringement.

The lawsuit comes after Google stole its technology in the process of cooperation and launched its first multi room wireless audio product, chromecast audio, in 2015.

It said it "not only copied the company's patented technology, but also subsidized the price of its patent infringing products.".

According to SONOS, when the two sides launched cooperation in 2013, Google integrated Google play music into the SONOS platform, thus mastering the multi room broadcast patent of SONOS.

Just two years later, Google launched chromecast audio, based on a multi room broadcast patent.

Since then, patent infringement has been continuous, multi room audio system is applied to more than a dozen different products, but all of them are made and designed by stealing SONOS patent.

But there may be other reasons for SONOS's prosecution, which is the severe market competition.

Compared with its own sound system, Google's smart speaker is more attractive and its price is more "beautiful". For similar functions, SONOS costs hundreds of dollars, while Google's impression is only 35 dollars.

Google is not sitting on the sidelines in the patent lawsuit filed by SONOS.

Five months after SONOS sued Google, Google filed a counterclaim alleging that SONOS deliberately copied its patented speaker technology.

Google said that SONOS violated five patents by applying Google's technology to SONOS products without permission.

You sue me for 1 patent infringement and I sue you for 6 patent infringement!

This time, the lawsuit also escalated the struggle between the two sides in the field of home audio to a white hot stage.

Google wrote in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Northern California:

"In a lawsuit brought by SONOS to Google earlier this year, SONOS misrepresented the cooperation between the two companies and Google's technology. Although Google rarely sues other companies for patent infringement, it has to defend its intellectual property here. "

At present, the United States International Trade Commission has launched an investigation.
